Usually when people talk in favour of or against organic farming, the emphasis is on crop production. Pretty much as if organic farming does not support livestock.
But
then is there anything like organic livestock farming? Well, pal, you’re damn
right there is. So, here are the basic things to always remember about
organic livestock farming.
1. Livestock production is an important
component of organic farming.
Raising
livestock and poultry for meat, dairy and eggs under conditions considered to
be completely organic is one activity that the organic farmer is truly proud
of.
Think
fowls that don't bring cancer. Imagine meat that is free of chemicals.
Yes,
they cost more in the market but as long as healthy food is concerned, organic
livestock is the first choice for those who know better.
2. Organic
farms provide animals with natural feeds and living conditions.
Throughout
the animals’ lives, they are only sustained on organic feed. No junk food. No
performance enhancing drugs. If it's not good for Ben Johnson what
automatically makes it worthy for birds.
It's
raising a beautiful bunch of animals whose composition inside and out is free
of inorganic materials.
3. When sick, organic animals are as a
matter of law treated with medicine to aid their quick recovery.
However
they cannot be placed on drugs that enhance their growth.
Organic
livestock farming does not preach making animals bear pain and suffering. If
your bird is sick, call in the doctor. And if he prescribes any drug, don't say Farm Starter Blog says it's wrong. Because it isn't.
The
game only changes if your animals get well and you continue to inject them the
drugs with the intention of enhancing their size and performance.
4. The waste obtained from organic animals
is an important source of manure and fuel used on the farms.
5. Any animal that was genetically
engineered cannot be accepted on an organic farm.
